Signify says Thanet Earth plans 26-hectare LED installation in Q4 2026

The supplier-announced East Kent project targets full-winter cucumber production, while Thanet Earth's own website already describes year-round cucumber growing.

Rows of greenhouse crops under LED lighting at Thanet Earth

UK greenhouse operator Thanet Earth is expected to install a Philips horticultural LED system across approximately 26 hectares in the fourth quarter of 2026, according to an announcement from lighting supplier Signify reproduced by Hortimedia. The installation remains planned rather than completed.

Signify said the East Kent project is intended to let Thanet Earth grow cucumbers through the full UK winter for the first time, alongside tomatoes already grown under lights. Because the announcement comes from a responsible project partner, the area, timing and expected production outcome should be read as supplier and participant claims rather than independently measured results.

Lighting scope and supplier roles

The announced package includes Philips GreenPower LED toplighting force fixtures and the Philips GrowWise control system. Signify said growers will be able to adjust light intensity and spectrum during the day in response to daylight and crop requirements. It also identified Tebarex as an installation-support partner providing expertise in greenhouse electrical and water systems, and referred to Dutch grower Bryte as an operating reference for the cucumber approach.

No capital cost or glasshouse-by-glasshouse installation schedule was disclosed. The available announcement also does not provide measured energy use, crop yield or payback data for the proposed 26-hectare deployment.

Operator evidence and an unresolved wording gap

Thanet Earth’s own lighting page confirms that the operator uses supplemental LED lighting and says this supports year-round tomato and cucumber production. That general operator statement does not independently confirm the new 26-hectare system, its Q4 2026 timing or the specific Signify equipment.

There is also a wording discrepancy: Thanet Earth already describes year-round cucumber production, while Signify’s announcement says the new system will enable full-winter cucumber growing for the first time. The public materials do not explain whether those phrases refer to different glasshouses, production volumes or definitions of a full winter programme.

Why it matters

If delivered at the announced scale, the project would be a large commercial lighting deployment designed to extend domestic winter supply and give the operator more flexibility between tomatoes and cucumbers. For growers and procurement teams, the material next signals will be confirmation that installation has been completed, clarification of the production scope and operating data from the first winter cycle.

Key takeaways

  • Signify says Thanet Earth plans an approximately 26-hectare Philips LED installation in Q4 2026.
  • The stated objective is full-winter cucumber production, but the operator’s existing website already refers to year-round cucumbers.
  • Capital cost, detailed installation sequencing and measured operating results have not been disclosed.
