Griffin named stalking-horse bidder for BFG Supply wholesale assets

The proposed transaction gives Griffin a baseline position in BFG Supply’s Chapter 11 asset sale while the bidding process remains open.

Griffin Greenhouse Supplies has been named the stalking-horse bidder for wholesale assets associated with BFG Supply, moving the distributor’s Chapter 11 asset-sale process into a more defined stage.

The designation gives Griffin the opening position in the sale process, but it does not mean an acquisition has been completed.

According to Greenhouse Grower’s October 2 report, Griffin is evaluating warehouses, inventory and other BFG holdings as part of the process. The company is focusing in particular on facilities in Grand Rapids and Kalamazoo, Michigan; St. Paul, Minnesota; Denver, Colorado; and Fife, Washington.

The transaction remains in a sale process

A stalking-horse bidder establishes the initial framework against which other qualified bids can be evaluated. That distinction matters for suppliers and growers following BFG’s restructuring: Griffin is currently the baseline bidder, not the confirmed final buyer.

Greenhouse Grower reported that Griffin is working toward a targeted transaction date of October 22, 2026. Griffin also expects to add more than 90 employees in connection with its broader growth plans, with around 30 already onboard, according to the report.

Griffin Managing Director Andrew Barry said the company is evaluating how the assets could complement its existing capabilities and expand customer coverage.

Why it matters

BFG Supply has been an important horticultural distributor serving greenhouse, nursery and retail customers. A transfer of wholesale assets could change warehouse coverage, supplier relationships and distribution capacity across several U.S. regions.

For growers, the immediate signal is the restructuring of a major supply-chain participant and the possibility that Griffin could expand its physical distribution footprint if the transaction closes.

What remains unclear

The final set of assets Griffin may acquire, the final transaction price and whether competing bids will alter the outcome remain subject to the sale process.

Key takeaways

  • Griffin Greenhouse Supplies is the stalking-horse bidder for BFG Supply wholesale assets.
  • The designation sets the baseline for the sale process; it is not a completed acquisition.
  • The next signals to watch are competing bids, the final asset package and whether the transaction closes on the current timetable.
