Trison Farms starts 11.75-acre greenhouse build in Leamington

The first phase adds about 4.76 hectares of growing area, with construction targeted for May 2027 and planting planned for June.

Trison Farms has broken ground on a new greenhouse in Leamington, Ontario, moving the first phase of a new site into physical construction. The phase will provide 11.75 acres of growing area, about 4.76 hectares, with greenhouse builder Universal Fabricating involved in the project.

Construction is targeted for completion by the end of May 2027, with planting planned for June 2027, according to current project reporting based on information from the builder. The full first-phase building footprint, including the service area and boiler room, is expected to cover about 12.97 acres, or 5.25 hectares.

The first phase is now under construction

Universal Fabricating has confirmed the groundbreaking for Trison Farms’ new Leamington location, establishing that the project has moved beyond planning into construction. The builder and Trison Farms leadership took part in the start-of-work ceremony.

HortiDaily reported that the first phase includes 11.75 acres of growing area and that the planned construction timetable runs through the end of May 2027. The same report puts the total building footprint at approximately 12.97 acres once the service and boiler areas are included.

Tomatoes are the planned crop, with timing still flexible

The greenhouse is designated for tomato production. Current project information also leaves open the possibility that cucumbers could be planted first if the construction schedule makes that operationally preferable. The final first crop should therefore be treated as not yet fixed.

Universal Fabricating has previously worked with Trison Farms at its existing I.P.R. Farms operation, where the builder carried out a greenhouse lifting project in 2023. The new Leamington site represents a separate construction milestone rather than a routine upgrade to the existing facility.

Why it matters

The project adds nearly 4.8 hectares of new protected growing area in the Leamington greenhouse cluster and has a defined construction and planting timetable. For suppliers, the signal is a live new-build project with immediate demand for greenhouse structure, heating, water, climate and crop-support systems rather than an early-stage development proposal.

What remains unclear

Trison Farms and Universal Fabricating have not disclosed the capital expenditure for the first phase. The reviewed sources also do not establish whether additional phases beyond the initial 11.75 acres are already committed, and the exact first crop may still depend on construction timing.

Key takeaways

  • Trison Farms has started construction of an 11.75-acre, approximately 4.76-hectare greenhouse phase in Leamington.
  • The total first-phase footprint is reported at about 12.97 acres, with construction targeted for the end of May 2027 and planting planned for June.
  • Tomatoes are the designated crop, although cucumbers could be planted first depending on the construction schedule.
